Hair growth and Phases

Hair growth occurs in a cycle that consists of several distinct phases. Understanding these phases is crucial for various cosmetic and medical treatments, including hair removal and transplantation. The hair growth cycle is typically divided into three main phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen.

  1. Anagen Phase (Active Growth):

    • This is the active growth phase of hair follicles.

    • The cells in the root of the hair are dividing rapidly, and new hair is formed.

    • The duration of the anagen phase varies by body location. For example, scalp hair may remain in this phase for several years, contributing to its long length.


  1. Catagen Phase (Transition):

    • The catagen phase is a transitional phase that follows the anagen phase.

    • It is a relatively short phase lasting a few weeks.

    • During catagen, the hair follicle shrinks, and the hair separates from the dermal papilla (the structure that nourishes and supports the hair bulb).


  1. Telogen Phase (Resting):

    • The telogen phase is the resting phase of the hair follicle.

    • It lasts several weeks to several months.

    • In this phase, the hair is fully formed but not actively growing.

    • About 10-15% of hairs are typically in the telogen phase at any given time.


After the telogen phase, the cycle usually reverts to the anagen phase, with the old hair falling out as a new hair begins to grow. It's important to note that not all hair follicles are in the same phase simultaneously, which is why you don't lose all your hair at once.

Factors Influencing Hair Growth:

  • Genetics: Genetic factors play a significant role in determining hair growth patterns, including the duration of the anagen phase.

  • Hormones: Hormonal changes, such as those that occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, can affect the hair growth cycle.

  • Nutrition: Adequate nutrition, including vitamins and minerals, is essential for healthy hair growth.

  • Age: The hair growth cycle may slow down with age, leading to thinner and slower-growing hair.

  • Health Conditions: Certain health conditions, medications, and treatments like chemotherapy can impact hair growth.

Understanding the hair growth cycle is essential for various beauty and medical interventions, including laser hair removal, waxing, and treatments for hair loss. It also helps explain why these interventions may require multiple sessions over time to achieve the desired results.
